As I was growing up, my dad has always been my best friend. Through football games, nascar races, playing sports and learning about cars, he taught me everything that I know. Yet, the one thing I still have yet to fully understand is the National Football League, commonly known as the NFL. Later on in life, I befriended a former high school football player who was medically unable to play a high contact sport for the rest of his days. His name is Tyler and he has had 6-7 documented concussions that have changed him and the way his mind processes things. Now, I know that he never played in the NFL, but football is something that he grew passionate about since he was a little boy and I love listening to him talk about the game that he loves.
While watching the NFL football games with him this past year, I learned that their are penalties and precautions that are enforced so that no one gets hurt for a long period of time. He feels more for the players who have suffered numerous concussions and has a inside connection with them. Since the Bengals vs. Steelers playoff game a few weeks ago, I wanted to do my research and catch a grasp as to why he was so angry about the safety regulation calls.
I feel very strong for this topic that I have chosen. I feel as if this will bring me closer to understanding why he has such mood swings, what goes through his head and why he is so passionate about the sport that he once played. I also feel that this will show me a perfect understanding on what happens what a major blow to the head does to a player. Since, I myself cannot play in the NFL, hearing what the players feel and what the doctors see would give me a perspective on my topic.
Before doing this research paper, I did not have a reason to look further into the issue of concussions and what the brain goes through just to gain memory again. Before, every little question that I had going through my mind just stayed in its own little folder in the back.
With this topic, I believe that not only I can get a great perspective on the issue, my fellow classmates as well can gain the same knowledge and understanding. I also believe that I can shine a light on what could help to prevent neurological brain damage to the players.
The things that I already know about this topic are that there are a lot of safety regulations to help protect the players on and off the field. In the early 2000’s, spearing and earshot’s were known as a hitting method in which the players use contact by the crown of the helmet while the player is completely defenseless. This type of contact can result in knocking a player out or giving them a major concussion. Some concussions go undocumented as a player can get hit in the head, not get knocked out, get right back up and continue to finish the game.
What I still need to know about this topic is how do the trainers know that a player has a concussion? I also would like to know what it takes to get a concussion and also what the exact definition to what a concussion is? I would like to know what NFL players caused this study to come out with the overall need to know basics on post concussions and what they are trying to do to improve helmet technology over the past decade or so? Another thing I would like to know is the long term and short term side effects to having numerous amounts of concussions in a few years time. One last thing I would like to know is what are the penalties handed down by the commissioner for these devastating illegal hits?
